Classifying Lepidoptera

A classification is a way to communicate the phylogenetic relatonships of a group of organisms. Classifications are usually arranged hierarchically, with higher taxa being more inclusive. The ca. 170.000 described species of Lepidoptera are placed in 126 families, which are in turn placed in 47 superfamilies. The current classification is based largely on the Handbook of Lepidoptera, published in 1999.
